Anna Sandri

Anna Sandri is a visual artist and designer from Canale (IT), currently living in Rotterdam (NL). She has a background in Illustration and Animation. In 2021 she graduated from the Experimental Publishing Master course at Piet Zwart Institute. Her practice crosses different analog and digital media including illustration, games, moving images, publications, creative coding and writing. In her work, she often investigates past and contemporary storytelling, narratology and visual culture.

Her current research focuses on religious iconography and its intertwining with online visual culture. In this framework, she is researching and exploring visual and symbolic patterns existing in catholic representations of pain and salvation as well as internet memes concerning pain disclosure and self-deprecating content. More than the official iconography she is focusing on the vernacular aspect of physical and digital “devotional” objects. In parallel with this she is experimenting with moving images by exploring pre-cinema animation techniques in combination with contemporary ones such as 3d printing and casting.

She is part of  Soup, a studio and artist-run space located at Kruisplein in Rotterdam.
